| Poppy aged about 14 weeks |
We did not look to have 3 dogs, but it just happened. Poppy arrived last night a beautiful black bundle of Labrador Retriever. At 16 weeks old we should be expecting mayhem and destruction, but Poppy has been born with Hereditary Myopathy of the Labrador Retriever; a genetic disorder which means that her type II muscle fibres will not develop properly. This may lead to problems with walking and holding her head up, and she will tire easily.
We decided to take her on, to give her as much quality as we can in what may or may not be a shortened life. If she reaches about 12 months to 18 months without being too disabled we believe that the disease will stabilise and she should have a relatively normal life span.
It will all become apparent over time, which is why I have decided to write this blog. Inevitably this will have a sad ending, but I hope that this may be in many years time, and that in between Poppy will have had the chance to experience a very loved life.
